Mikey Johnston celebrated his first start for Vitoria Guimaraes with an outstanding double in the 3-1 win away to Canelas 2010 in a Portuguese Cup tie.
The on loan winger had been restricted to three appearances off the bench following his August switch but gave coach Joao Aroso plenty to think about with two goals 13 minutes apart.
After another frustrating time last season with injuries it was in everyone’s interest for the 23-year-old to get out on loan and get some serious game time.
Standard Liege were strongly tipped as the likely destination but on deadline day a deal was done with Vitoria, providing Johnston with the chance of regular matches in a league that contains three Champions League clubs.
Vitoria were already leading 1-0 with a penalty when Johnston opened his account with an impressive run from the 10 yards inside his own half topped off by a confident finish.
His second goal came five minutes from the break with his second touch leaving the Canelas goalkeeper helpless.
The target now will be more of the same as Johnston looks to realise the potential that earned him a Celtic debut alongside Tony Ralston in May 2017.
Vitoria face Boavista in the league next Sunday.
