Dave Cormack has admitted that Aberdeen aren’t in control of the future of Connor Barron.

In June the midfielder was reported to be a Celtic transfer target but after picking up an injury in pre-season training he has only returned to action in the last three matches.

Celtic don’t appear to have any immediate need for a midfielder but with growing interest in Matt O’Riley, Oliver Abildgaard on loan and Aaron Mooy and James McCarthy over 30 there could be an opening at some stage over the next 12 months.

Over three transfer windows Ben Siegrist is the only Scottish based player signed by Ange Postecoglou but the hoops boss is always quick to highlight the contributions of Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Greg Taylor.

Commenting on Barron’s situation, Cormack told the Daily Record:

It all comes down to whether Connor sees his future at Aberdeen beyond the two years he has left. We’ve made a significant offer to the player to stay with Aberdeen but we’re not in control of that situation. He and his agent are in control but it is incumbent on us – and we’ve expanded our recruitment team – to expand our conveyor belt.

During the summer Aberdeen brought in significant transfer fees for Calvin Ramsey and Lewis Ferguson which will be their benchmark for any Barron deal.

Ange Postecoglou spoke out at the start of this week about how his plans for the January transfer window were already well advanced.

In January Aberdeen announced that Barron had signed a new contract that runs until May 2024.
