There weren’t many gags, jokes and quips from Ally McCoist last night as he stood at Ibrox watching his old club go into the Champions League history books.

Back in 2011 McCoist masterminded an aggregate defeat in the Champions League to Malmo that spare the old club from being compared to pointless Dinamo Zagreb who ended up with a goal difference of -19.

Last night Giovanni van Bronckhorst went one better with the 3-1 defeat from Ajax taking it to 2-22 for the Ibrox newcomers.

Among the biggest flops was James Tavernier with the former Wigan utility man completely found out over six matches culminating in last nights opening goal.

At kick-off time some bears were considering a 5-0 home win but five minutes into the match it was business as usual as Tav got skinned with starlet Leon King looking like a competition winner as the ball flew past him into the net.

Picking up on angry McCoist on BT Sport, the Daily Record reports:

I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know whether it (Ajax’s first goal) is a brilliant finish, but that is defensively shocking. The full back is caught on the inside AGAIN. You have to give yourself half a yard, and if it goes short you go and match him.

If you get caught on the inside, you get caught chasing your tail. And I don’t know what Leon King is thinking about. Does he think it’s going by the post? That he can stick out a leg? That the goalkeeper has got it? It’s just a disastrous goal to lose, to tell you the truth.

Afterwards Tav admitted that his side lacked hunger and fight.
