The Daily Mail has revealed that ‘human error’ was to blame for the VAR image used to justify Jota’s ‘goal’ being disallowed against Motherwell on Wednesday night.

After four rounds of fixtures it seems that the operation of VAR has descended into chaos with a glut of debatable hand-ball decisions leading to penalties and confusing messages being sent out.

Using a camera on the half-way line Motherwell TV showed that there was a borderline decision to be made on whether or not Jota was offside when he ran onto a pass from Kyogo Furuhashi.

With VAR in operation additional cameras should be available to apply Hawkeye technology to provide a definite image of whether Jota was offside.

Instead, a few minutes after the goal was disallowed a distant image with unclear lines was shown to explain why the goal had been disallowed.

Last night The Sun claimed that one camera was viewing the dug-out area when the pass was made, this morning on the BBC Gossip page the Daily Mail are going with an unexplained human error. Handball and penalties are still subjective decisions but VAR should take human error out of offside calls.

Should Celtic publish the reply from the SFA over the Jota VAR decision?

Since VAR was launched with a flurry of media access and activity there has been no comment from Referee Chief Crawford Allan to explain any decisions taken.

Tomorrow David Munro will referee the Celtic v Ross County match with Ewan Anderson on VAR.

David Dickinson, who was on VAR duty at Motherwell on Wedneday night will referee tomorrow’s match between Kilmarnock and Hibs.

Human error is impossible with Hawkeye, it’s a fixed camera system. They are scrambling for excuses, Celtic should demand all footage from the cameras, and get an explanation as to why the challenge on to Starfelt wasn’t a red! I won’t hold my breath.

  • Joseph Mcaleer says:

We just award the goal of the season to Jota and to hell with them, and make it our official goal,as a protest against the Refereeing and their bias towards Celtic.

  • BhilltheTim says:

    Aaaaaaarrrrgghhhh!!!

Please nip this ‘Vargate’ nonsense in the bud. The ‘gate’ suffix for even the slightest hint of controversy has been totally done to death over the years and should be consigned to the circular file where it belongs.

(I bet half the readers on here don’t even know why ‘-gate’ gets used as it does.)

    • Walter Chinstrap says:

      Yes we know!!
It derives from the scandal when Nixon caught his penis in the gate leaving a brothel.
      FFS!
      Think we’re stupid!

I have an idea on paying for an upgrade to VAR because the version we have is so open to “human error” it renders it useless. If we have a “compliance officer” sack that person. Stop the appeal process and all the people involved can do other things. And use the money saved to go to upgrading VAR to a version that stops “human error”

At least VAR is doing something positive: is makes sure that dodgy decisions are not just ignored by the SMSM – and dismissed as fans’ paranoia.

VAR has its faults, of course, but it’s possibly the only route to publicising shocking officiating errors – and forcing improvements – in the Scottish senior game?

VAR aside: that ‘lunge’ on Starfelt was a straight red all day long.
