Joe Hart knows a thing or two about international football- last night he kept an eye on two matches as team-mate Cameron Carter-Vickers helped the USA into the last 16 of the World Cup alongside England.

It was a very testing competitive international debut for the stand-in Celtic skipper as he was drafted in for the most political fixture of the tournament with the added element of being a winner takes all group match.

Carter-Vickers wasn’t flustered in any way by the hype surrounding the match, reproducing his form for the hoops while representing the stars and stripes.

Christian Pulisic scored in the 38th minute with Cart-Vickers and his fellow defenders closing the door on the goal that Iran needed to edge their way into second place.

There will be a huge amount of relief in the USA squad after getting past Iran, now they have to turn their attention to Holland and Saturday’s last 16 clash as they attempt to extend their stay in Qatar.
