Celtic won’t be pushed into a decision next month on whether or not to keep Moritz Jenz.

The defender was signed on loan from French side Lorient at the start of the season but there appears to be no option to break the loan in January.

Celtic have options to recall Liam Scales and Adam Montomery from Aberdeen and St Johnstone but the Jenz deal is for the full season.

Football Scotland reports:

Celtic have until the end of the season to decide whether or not to sign Moritz Jenz on a permanent deal.

The defender, 23, was brought to Parkhead on a loan deal from Lorient in the summer as Ange Postecoglou looked to bolster his defence ahead of the new season. The deal made with the French outfit included a permanent option down the line should the manager wish to keep the player full-time.

There had been reports suggesting Celts would have a decision to make in January however Football Scotland understands the club have until the end of the current campaign before choosing their next steps.

Injuries to Carl Starfelt and and Cameron Carter-Vickers saw Jenz playing regularly in the first part of the season including all six Champions League group matches.

With Starfelt now fully recovered Ange Postecoglou has reunited the defensive partnership that played every minute of the last 18 SPFL matches of last season.

Ahead of the January transfer window Celtic have signed Yuki Kobayashi on a permanent deal which would suggest that Postecoglou isn’t convinced of the value of signing Jenz on a permanent basis.

  • Jim Duffy says:

IMO jenz is a decent player and deserves a full time contract ,he is as good if not better than Starfelt who in his own right is a decent player,so you can’t have too many central defenders ie because of injuries suspensions or whatever.
