Stephen Welsh is reported to be interesting Porto.

The defender is currently injured but in his limited appearances this season has impressed, even during Celtic’s Champions League defeat away to RB Leipzig on a night when few players did themselves justice.

Yuki Kobayashi was the first signing made by Ange Postecoglou for the January 2023 transfer window which would suggest that Welsh drops behind the new man as well as Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starleft.

Despite that there seems to be strong continental interest in the 22-year-old, in The Express transfer specialist Scott Burns explains:

Celtic will have a decision to make over Stephen Welsh’s future in the January window.

The Scotland under-21 star is being tracked by clubs in England, Italy and France. Online rumours have also linked Porto with a possible interest in Welsh. The central defender was the subject of an approach from French side Toulouse in the last window but that was knocked back by the Hoops.

With Moritz Jenz currently on loan at Celtic Postecoglou has five central defenders to select from with Bosun Lawal, on the bench at Aberdeen on Saturday a sixth option.

Welsh is rapidly approaching the stage in his career where he requires more regular first team football but a January move can be difficult to adapt to without the breaking in period of pre-season training.

Welsh is more than capable of a good run, and an international spot, given the chance. False economy to let such a good defender leave.
