Showing their complete lack of awareness Tom English and Allan Preston spent part of Wednesday night’s Sportsound discussing how superior Scott Arfield is the Reo Hatate!

It might have been a cold night after an uninspiring Celtic win over Livingston in the lead up to Christmas but there is no reasonable excuse for the conversation to turn that desperate.

Yes Arfield scored two goals the previous night that were celebrated throughout BBC Scotland but there are still certain lines that you pull back from.

The former Huddersfield and Burnley midfielder is the definition of a journeyman.

At the age of 34 he has two career medals to his name. Despite extensive caps at u-19 and u-21 level he never got a sniff of a full cap in the worst era ever in Scottish international football.

James Morrison, Matt Richie, Chris Martin, Graham Dorrans, Craig Conway, George Boyd, Craig Bryson, Russell Martin and Peter Pawlett won Scotland caps, Arfield was never even on international stand-by.

Seeing the light he opted to play for Canada, as soon as he retired from international football Canada qualified for the World Cup Finals.

Allan Preston: Arfield bangs into the box, Arfield would have scored goals if he had played for Celtic tonight. He’d have been in that box, he’d have been in that area. He would have been in there scoring goals and that’s maybe what Celtic are lacking.

Someone that will go beyond, go into that middle of the box, penalty spot kind of area. That’s maybe something that they could be looking for- goal scoring midfield player? One that, not the wider ones, Abada and Jota will create and go in and score goals

Tom English: In that Hatate position?

AP: Yeah

TE: Because your not taking McGregor out of the team

AP: No, no chance.

TE: I think, you need, Hatate is fine………. but if you look at Champions League level I think that you need better in that position, you need more of a threat.

After tanking circulation at The Scotsman and virtually wiping Scotland on Sunday off the map English took his unique skillset to the safety of BBC Scotland in January 2014.

Despite his title as Chief Sports Writer he hasn’t been near any of three World Cup Finals, an Olympic Games or a British Lions Tour since moving to the state broadcaster.

While telling various others that they need to test themselves outside of Scotland English has never had a sniff of a job offer in England. Affectionately known within the BBC as House Paddy it seems that there are no jobs writing about egg-chasing on the go in Ireland.

Preston does know his football, his main job is as an agent for the Stellar Group.

There are many ,many anti Celtic commentators at dear old aunty BBC Scotland ! I’ve found that on many occasions , Alan Preston is one of the worst ,if not the worst in that category …

  • John mcghee says:

Pair of wankers they 2 honest.

  • Scud Missile says:

Sevco the worst team ever to play in the champions league and they mention Arfield about replacing Hatate in the Celtic team for this.

Just exactly where has Arfield been all season when they dropped points to lower ranked teams St Johnstone, Hibs Livi.

These 2 bams are thick as shite before we know Arfield will be up there for player of the year,an absolute cert for player of the month with those 2 goals.

Next up for discussion Kent to replace Jota and FATSO to replace Kyogo and our big Greek striker.

These people get paid good money for this

You could record 3 drunk guys sitting in a boozer talking about football that would make more sense

  • Allaboutceltic says:

So the guy who can’t even get a start for *theRaijurs and is their most used sub is going to replace a double cup winner in the Champion’s team.

The pundits in this country are every bit as bad & bitter as the refs

    HAIL HAIL
    KEEP THE FAITH??

There’s a Freudian Slip there that acknowledges that Celtic are a superior football team to the Huns. That is easy to see.
But there’s a second, deeper one, that indicates that they resent Hatate!
That is easy to explain if you consider that they resent the talent that Hatate undoubtably has. They are not willing to accept Hatate as himself for what he is, but regard him because of the skill and talent that he has. They are envious. They would take that skill from Hatate if they could and that would give themselves credit in the eyes of the Huns, their masters.
In Scottish society, you cannot excel yourself for excellence’s sake and if you do, you will be discredited or you will lose your job. They would prefer to destroy the talent you have rather than let you use it yourself.

    • SFATHENADIROFCHIFTINESS says:

The ‘ Other ‘ must never be allowed to eclipse ‘Thum’.
That’s the 1st Law of their ‘ Exceptionalism’ mindset.
They’d rather celebrate dross than accept a reality that doesn’t conform to
      their insular and inbred worldview.
Thankfully they are a dying breed.

  • Michael Conway says:

Some people should lay off the electric soup before they utter nonsense, how did airfield get on in the champions league,o that’s right he was part off the worst ever team to participate in that competition

  • the maister says:

You just KNOW that English is wearing a bra under his shirt there! Look at his specs.
A traitor to his country and left his Christianity at the door of good old radio Scotland!
