VVV Venlo are closely following the Celtic exit of Giorgos Giakoumakis as they wait for their cut on the transfer fee.

After being relegated from the Eredivisie at the end of the 20/21 Lockdown season it was obvious that the leading scorer in the league would be sold on after one season at Venlo.

Much like this window there was limited interest in the striker with none of the big three Dutch sides showing interest in the Greek internationalist.

At the age of 26 only Celtic and newly relegated Werder Bremen were showing interest in Giakoumakis with Ange Postecoglou managing to get a deal completed at the end of the summer transfer window.

Venlo have watched their former player from afar and are now anticipating a second pay out from Celtic although they will also have to send a cut of their fee to AEK Athens.

Voetbal International claims:

VVV-Venlo sold the top scorer a year and a half ago for 2.5 million euros excluding bonuses to Celtic and stipulated a resale percentage of fifteen percent.

Discussing the striker, VVV Venlo General Manager Marco Bogers explained:

He is very careful in making a choice. Given his age, I expect that the financial aspect will play an important role. He hadn’t had any complaints in that regard in Japan either. At Urawa Red Diamonds, he would become a teammate of Bryan Linssen. I have been in contact with Bryan, who told me that Jako was seriously involved there. Apparently he has now made a different choice. Although I say that carefully, because as far as I know nothing is final yet

On the sell on clause he added:

That is why we considered the resale percentage to be very important. We had the hope that he would make a step to the Premier League. That tradition is there, with Celtic players. Recently another striker went to Crystal Palace, for seventeen million pounds I think (Odsonne Edouard, ed.). In the Premier League, such amounts are easily paid. We hoped that Giakoumakis would also make such a big transfer. It is also quite strange that English clubs have not yet come. He presents great statistics.

We will still have to hand over part of the amount to AEK Athens, Giakoumakis’ previous club. And to his agent. In the end you are still talking about tons that remain. Money that we have not budgeted for and that we have not taken into account for this season. This extra income is always nice for a club like VVV.

Have Celtic did enough in January with four signings?

Yes, new fresh younger talent. Bang on.
