Former Celt urges Dave Cormack to make the Kennedy call

Kris Commons has urged Dave Cormack to pick up the phone to ask about John Kennedy’s availability for his managerial vacancy.

On Saturday, 19 minutes after the final whistle in a 6-0 defeat the Aberdeen chief sacked Jim Goodwin, less than a year after Stephen Glass suffered the same fate.

Just before Christmas Goodwin sent out a side that pushed Celtic all the way until the 87th minute before Callum McGregor broke the deadlock to keep Celtic on course towards the SPFL title.

Only a fortnight ago Goodwin took Micheal Beale’s side to extra time in the semi-final of the Viaplay Cup but what happened next had one inevitable consequence.

An aggregate of 0-12 from trips to Hearts, Darvel and Hibs saw Goodwin make a sharp exit from Easter Road while his former charges were still in the dressing room.

Neil Lennon and Scott Brown have been linked to the Pittodrie vacancy but Commons has another Celtic linked suggestion which he shared with Daily Mail readers:

For me, John Kennedy would also be worth consideration. I know he’s maybe slightly left-field and lacks the managerial experience Aberdeen might feel they need right now.

But I know from my own  experience of working with him that he’s an excellent coach. He’s held in the highest regard by pretty much everyone he’s worked with.

He’s been heavily linked with vacancies at Hibs and Motherwell in the past. Could this be the time where he finally branches out from Celtic and becomes the main man as a head coach?

I reckon Aberdeen could do a lot worse than at least lift the phone and ask the question. Kennedy brings a wealth of experience working under the likes of Lennon, Brendan  Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou.

But one thing’s for sure. Aberdeen and Cormack must get this next appointment right. Dons fans deserve better than to see their club become the laughing stock of Scottish football.

Kennedy will want a crack at management at some time soon, Aberdeen would be a great fit but timing is everything in football with red flags all around Pittodrie while Cormack makes himself front and central at the club.

Barry Robson has been appointed caretaker manager at Aberdeen, on Wednesday night St Mirren visit Pittodrie.

Getting the next appointment right means taking no chances on a rookie coach like JK. I doubt the Dons will want to emulate Sevco by hiring an inexperienced squad coach and bigging him up as something he possibly isn’t…
