Celtic appear to be in negotiations to sign Cho Gue-sung.

The hoops were first linked with the striker back in November but the prospect of losing Giorgos Giakoumakis adds extra urgency to the need to bring in another striker.

In the current climate a fee of £2.7m doesn’t buy you very much in Europe but that is the figure being banded about in relation to Gue-sung.

This afternoon Football Scotland reports:

Cho Gue-sung’s future has taken a fresh twist after Celtic outbid Mainz for the signature of the South Korea striker.

The World Cup star appeared set for a move to Germany after Mainz submitted an offer believed to be around £2.7million. However, Football Scotland understands Celtic have now officially entered the bidding war by tabling more money for the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors frontman – which could rule Bundesliga side Mainz out of the race.

Former Manchester United favourite Park Ji-Sung is currently in London leading negotiations on behalf of Jeonbuk as their technical director. The K League 1 club were initially reluctant to lose their star man this month but have now accepted an exit is inevitable, with interest growing across Europe and the United States.

There is a lot of detail in that report from Mark Hendry, more than the usual type at this time of year where the link maybe fairly tedious.

During the summer Hendry was first to cover Celtic’s interest in Alexandro Bernabei, clearly he has some strong contacts involved somewhere in Celtic’s transfer negotiations.

While signing six players from Japan Ange Postecoglou has also mentioned South Korea as a market that Celtic can get value from. So far this month the hoops have signed Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston and Tomoki Iwata.
