Callum Davidson hasn’t ruled out getting Adam Montgomery back on loan for the remainder of the season.

Used mainly as a left wing-back, Montgomery joined St Johnstone in time for pre-season training and made 17 appearances until the turn of the year.

The 20-year-old is back training at Celtic with his return falling at virtually the same time as Greg Taylor suffered a hamstring injury.

Timescales for hamstring issues can vary greatly, last season David Turnbull and Kyogo Furuhashi were out for three months but the early reports on Taylor are that he should be back before the end of the month.

After finishing last season in the relegation play-off St Johnstone are pushing for a top six place with Davidson pleased with the role played by his loan Celtic.

Just as Ange Postecoglou is assessing his squad so to is Davidson with Montgomery still in his thoughts.

The St Johnstone boss told The Courier:

With Adam, we’re in the position where we’ve got Callum (Booth) and Tony (Gallacher) back fully fit and raring to go. We had to bring Adam in due to their long-term injuries.

Adam did really well for us. He’s a great boy and a great character. He got better and better and big thanks to him.

Now we’ve got Callum and Tony fighting for a starting position. It’s up to them. That goes for the whole team.

On the prospects of Montgomery returning he added:

Things can change. I get asked about players and I’d never say a 100% ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as to whether somebody might come back or somebody might leave.

There are always moving pieces and we need to be ready for when things happen.

Alexandro Bernabei will deputise while Taylor is out injured but after the Argentinian the next option would be Yuki Kobayashi who is yet to make his Celtic debut.

Montgomery played four League Cup ties for St Johnstone, ruling him out of Saturday’s Viaplay Cup semi-final against Kilmarnock.
