Ange Postecoglou understands the reasons why transfer windows pass by without any attention on Callum McGregor leaving Celtic.

The midfielder has been the most consistently outstanding talent in the Scottish game over the last six seasons, setting new standards and never appearing bored by the familiarity around him.

There is a limit for most players over how many times they can get excited over a trip to McDiarmid Park or the road to Dingwall but McGregor maintains the highest levels of motivation and performances.

From Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic through to Aaron Mooy and Reo Hatate the home developed midfielder has been an outstanding team-mate without ever seeking out attention and projecting himself as the story.

There is a tried and tested formula for generating interest and offers but as Postecoglou told The Scotsman McGregor steers clear of that as he chases further success in a Celtic shirt.

Discussing the apparent lack of transfer enquires the Celtic boss said:

I think a lot of that is down to Callum himself. With a lot of these things, it’s often the players themselves who push their representatives to look for opportunities. I’m sure Cal will have had opportunities. In fact, I’m definite on that. But the fact is you don’t hear about it and that’s testament to his character. And also the people around him.

Other players in his position would probably advertise the fact they’ve knocked back this club and that club and they’re not interested in going here or there but that’s not who he is. That’s not his character so I wouldn’t take the fact that he doesn’t get talked about like there hasn’t been interest.

I can guarantee there would have been from the highest level for Callum. But he’s really proud of the fact he represents this football club. He loves his role as captain and he really wants to leave a mark here. It’s a credit to him that he continues to do so.

In the summer McGregor turns 30, as a relatively late starter, making his first team debut at 21 there are plenty more years left for him to take his team-mates to new heights.
