As the BBC Radio Leeds football expert Adam Pope has good grasp of what is going on in and around Elland Road.

Since Monday afternoon he has been very busy with the search underway for the managerial successor to Jesse Marsch.

With barely any midweek fixtures and the transfer window closed the Leeds vacancy has attracted more attention than usual, helped strangely with the club involved in the only midweek EPL fixture, drawing 2-2 last night away to Manchester United.

Many in the Scottish media are in a frenzied state of excitement about the possible exit of Ange Postecoglou but Pope named six candidates in an in-depth article without touching on the Celtic boss.

On BBC Leeds, the local expert reviews the runners and riders for the Elland Road job:

Rayo Vallecano’s Andoni Iraola is understood to admired by Orta. The former Athletic Bilbao defender, who played under Bielsa, has done a stunning job at Rayo, who are defying the natural order in Spain by sitting fifth in La Liga.

When Iraola was asked about interest from other clubs, he played his achievements down. “Football is about the players – we, the coaches, are not as important,” he said. “It’s the players who make us seem like we are the best and I am fortunate enough to have players who are showing their level.”

Carlos Corberan, who took Huddersfield Town to last year’s Championship play-off final and could well repeat the feat with West Bromwich Albion this time around, was also linked. But the Spaniard, who worked at Leeds as both under-23s head coach and first-team assistant under Bielsa, has signed a new deal with West Brom.

Supporters would like an ambitious appointment and that inevitably means names like Mauricio Pochettino being mentioned but he, Rafael Benitez and Steven Gerrard are not in the early reckoning.

Burnley’s Vincent Kompany would certainly appeal. His playing experience in the Premier League with Manchester City and his coaching debut at Anderlecht have helped him to charge the Clarets to the top of the Championship.

After his spell at Villa it is unlikely that Gerrard will ever get another EPL job depite his army of former team-mates lobbying for him in the media.
