Giorgos Giakoumakis has delivered a brutally honest assessment of Scottish football during a media conference at Atlanta United.

The striker finally completed his transfer to the MLS club in midweek, leaving behind some great goals and memories from effectively one calendar year in Scotland.

Giakoumakis switched from relegation in Holland at VVV Venlo to a title win with Celtic where Ange Postecoglou’s side regularly have 70% or more possession.

It doesn’t make for much of a spectacle with the Greek internationalist expecting to find a decent middle ground with Atlanta United.

In Celtic it was a totally different style of play because the competition there is not so good.

There are two clubs then all the other clubs try to defend. So most of the opponents were trying to block us in their box. We were keeping possession and trying to create spaces, scoring in a different way.

I think this league is a bit more competitive, they all try to play so I think that I will find even more space in the back of the defences and I will create more problems.

It is interesting to get an outsiders view on the Scottish game, Celtic fans are accustomed to seeing their team utterly dominate in domestic matches with mainly the time of the breakthrough and the extent of the winning margin up for debate.

Only in European matches do Celtic get involved in proper contests, after one season with Atlanta it wouldn’t be a sock if an offer came in to take Giakoumakis to a major European league.

He didn’t say anything wrong … Celtic has to get out of Scottish football , as it will not get any better , it will only keep getting worse.
We had the best chance when the other Glasgow club died .. dismiss the lesser domestic competitions and concentrate fully on the league, and the Champions league prize monies , but no … Liewell had to downgrade to domestic competition rather than upgrading to knockout / last 16 Champions League status .

He’s right. Moreover, with Scottish clubs invariably shutting up shop it becomes a transition to play the top clubs in Europe.
