Was there one big VAR call at Hampden missed by John Beaton?

To the surprise of many Sunday’s Viaplay Cup Final at Hampden seemed to pass off VAR free.

In the previous Glasgow derby the after-match focus was firmly on John Beaton and Willie Collum on VAR duty over two big penalty calls during the second half.

At Hampden on Sunday the big screens weren’t in use, Nick Walsh wasn’t called over to the pitch-side monitor with no obvious stops in play as incidents were reviewed.

The match was screened live by Viaplay Sports but one Twitter user has picked up on an incident in the lead up to Alfredo Morelos’ goal in the 64th minute.

There is always contact at a set-piece, especially a corner or free-kick around the penalty box but on close inspection Aaron Mooy is given a significant push as he follows the cross from James Tavernier.

That created a yard for Morelos, he took one touch then poked the ball home from inside the six-yard box to put the last 30 minutes of the match on a knife-edge.

With half of Hampden going wild in celebration and the other half plunged into nervous despair it would be a brave call to disallow the goal. No message was flashed on the screens about a VAR check for a possible foul.

Some will put it down to clever work by the striker and goal-scorer, others will say foul play with referees regularly blowing for a free kick to the defending team from similar incidents.

Wasn’t a snowball in hells chance of the ref or VAR (Video Advantage Rangers) disallowing the goal. Mind you if it had been scored against Sevco in similar fashion a different tale may have ensued.

  • Jack says:

I’d say Beaton should never have had the job var he has shown his allegiance for the ibrox side and this is what happens a shove that gives him space to score big call ignored not missed

  • Scud Missile says:

And people on here had a go at myself for pointing out decisions like this would be ignored against us,I rest my case no further questions your honour.
You all know who you are aka the Chuckle brothers.

  • Tony B says:

No shove no goal, therefore it should have been disallowed since Fat Boy would never have scored without this unfair advantage.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

I admit that I didn’t notice it at the time – but your maybe sure they’re had to be something and it would be in the favour of Sevco !

That said in the previous League Cup Final – a marginal offside decision went in our favour…

Absolutely though – It doesn’t make it right in either case –

Why the F#ck can they just not get it bloody correct !

  • Dominic Hannah says:

Six of one, half dozen of the other,, can be your bottom dollar, this week at St Mirren there will be at least four decisions going to var, and every goal if any will be scrutinised for a foul or off side,,,

Thats why VAR wasn’t used because it was broke and the corrupt sfa new it was broke so why didn’t they say it was before the game because not once did they view any of the goals our put up the lines at offside if fact how can a celtic player be offside in his own half remember at hearts ground aswell the linesmen put his flag up for 2 of our players offside its a fucking joke especially the commentary never mentioned it our they just blank it as usual..
