James Sands has become the first Ibrox victim of Celtic’s victory in the final of the Viaplay Cup.
The utility man was signed on loan from New York City FC last January with Alex Rae drooling over his qualities while dismissing Reo Hatate.
Sands played the last few minutes of the win away to Livingston on February 18 but failed to make the matchday squad that lost to Celtic.
Starting just 15 SPFL matches in 13 months there was never any realistic prospect of the move becoming permanent with the loan cut short despite Micky Beale chasing a double of the SPFL Premiership title and Scottish Cup.
This afternoon the club announced:
RANGERS Football Club can today confirm James Sands has returned to parent club New York City FC.
The United States international joined Rangers on-loan in January 2022 and went on to make 41 appearances for the club in both domestic and European competition.Â
Sands featured for the Light Blues in the 2021/22 Europa League final and played his part in last season’s Scottish Cup run, as Rangers lifted the trophy for the first time in 13 years.Â
He has also made a contribution to this year’s run in the Scottish Cup, with the winning goal against Partick Thistle in the last round of the competition.
Sands enjoyed the benefits of tolerant Scottish referees on a number of occasions but was sent off at home to Napoli in the 3-0 Champions League defeat.
The same Alex Rae who doesn’t like utility players says Hatate wasn’t up to much but James Sands was some signing.
