No response from Ibrox as CNN probes Craig McPherson incident

Not even CNN can get a word out of Ibrox over the actions of Craig McPherson following last night’s SWPL draw against Celtic.

Twenty-four hours after the event that has been no comment from Ibrox beyond the bland deflections of manager Malky Thomson to Sky Sports immediately after the match.

Police Scotland are quoted to be looking into an incident at Broadwood but the SFA have kept their thoughts and actions to themselves.

Last night’s match was the first time that Sky Sports had given live coverage to an SWPL match but McPherson’s attack on Fran Alonso has completely overshadowed the 90 plus minutes that were played out to a UK wide audience.

With Scotland beating Spain at Hampden tonight the domestic news cycle will move on with the Ibrox club hoping that the storm will blow over before some token briefing to friendly and unquestioning media outlets.

Late this afternoon CNN reported:

A spokesperson for Celtic told CNN that it was “a hugely concerning incident, falling well below any acceptable standard.”

Celtic added: “We understand the matter is now being investigated and it will be up to all relevant authorities to take any appropriate action.”

Rangers manager Malky Thomson said he hadn’t witnessed the incident and told Sky Sports he wouldn’t comment, adding, “If that is the case, there will be an investigation into it and we will obviously look at it.”

CNN reached out to Rangers for comment but did not receive a response.

The SWPL told CNN it was aware of the incident but said it would “not make any further comment” while the investigation is ongoing.

The SWPL website announced:

The SWPL is aware of an incident following last night’s Rangers v Celtic match.

This incident is currently being investigated by Police Scotland and the Scottish FA. The SWPL will not make any further comment at this time, whilst these investigations are ongoing.
