Kris Commons isn’t looking for a job in the diplomatic corps or a cosy seat onboard the Ibrox media train.

It is more than six years since he last scored for Celtic but from his base back in England he keeps a keen and detached eye on the Scottish game.

Over the course of three transfer windows Ange Postecoglou transformed Celtic from a shell into an aggressive, attacking unit that hunts down opponents and piles on the goals until the mercy of the final whistle.

Across the city Micky Beale announced that there wasn’t much wrong when he took charge of the Europa League finalists in November.

With his honeymoon ending at Hampden last Sunday Beale is assessing the magnitude of the job that he has taken on with just two midfielders signed in January to add to a substantial wage bill.

Half a dozen players will leave at the end of their contracts in June but as Commons points out in the Daily Mail a bigger issue is those staying on, mainly sitting on lucrative contracts:

There’s some serious unrest at Ibrox at the moment. We’ve seen it with some of the banners unveiled by fans in recent weeks. They can see how far their club is behind Celtic on and off the pitch.

Recruitment is key to success  in modern football, but it’s  an area where Rangers have  faltered badly since winning the league.

By and large, they’ve signed a load of dross whilst also allowing key players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to run down their contracts.

Celtic’s stance on things like that is night and day. As soon as anyone shows any indication they won’t commit to a new deal, they’ll be out the door.

Postecoglou is ruthless about it, as we’ve seen with Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis.  Rangers, on the other hand, allow players to dilly-dally.

Given the unrest among  supporters, it feels like Rangers are just one result away from things really blowing up. It’s impossible to avoid the feeling that the past week has really put into perspective just how far they are behind Celtic.

Last summer £15m was spent on Ridvan Yilmaz, Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and Antonio Colak with free agents Tom Lawrence and John Souttar snapped up on long term deals.
