Daily Record joins the pile on to Scary Scouser Lundstram

A year ago they were singing his praises, in April 2023 the Daily Record is mocking the record of John Lundstram.

The Scary Scouser is now facing a battle for a midfield place from Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell as Micky Beale reshapes his side.

Ryan Jack and Malik Tillman seem to have eased Lundstram aside, with his lucrative contract ending in May 2024 a renewal on similar terms seems unlikely.

In the summer of 2021 there was no interest from EPL clubs in Lundstram as a free agent, finding a buyer in the summer to come up with a transfer fee and match his Ibrox wages will be a big ask for whoever replaces Ross Wilson.

Highlighting one horrific stat the Record reports:

John Lundstram was the “best on earth” in the eyes of Rangers fans last season as he was rewarded with a terrace chant in an adapted version of Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 hit due to his key role in helping the club reach the Europa League final.

But supporters’ opinions can change very quickly and one disgruntled punter shared a statistic from the Scouser’s time at Ibrox which has left a few fellow fans in shock as he revealed how the midfielder has managed just ONE assist in almost two full seasons.

And even then the 29-year-old set up Cedric Itten for the third goal in a 4-0 Scottish Cup stroll against Stirling Albion in the fourth round last season. That is one assist in 93 games which has raised a few eyebrows but some hit back at criticism, saying his position as a defensive midfielder – and often deployed at centre back – means that they wouldn’t expect much more.

There were no greater cheerleader for Lundstram than the Sports Desk at the Record, it seems his stock is falling in line with the print circulation of the Glasgow based publisher. To be fair to big John he has outscored Ryan Kent by 9 to 6 since moving to Ibrox.
