Back in September John Bennett told Ibrox fans that their current squad was simply the best.

Today, after Douglas Park walked away, Bennett took over as chairman with a massive rebuilt expected by supporters in the summer.

Two share issues since the turn of the year suggests that cash flow is a problem despite the club reaching the group stage of the Champions League and raising over £20m from the transfers of Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo.

Bennett now has to front up alongside Stewart Robertson as the club prepares to ask fans to renew their Season Tickets with uncertainty all around the club.

Seven first team players will be out of contract in two months time with Beale tasked with a summer rebuild that will deliver a place in the group stage of the Champions League while putting The Other Mob in their place in the SPFL.

On September 20, The Express reported:

On the new players Bennett said on RangersTV: “We haven’t seen enough of them but we will do. You take another young player, Yilmaz. Yes, we spent significant money on that transfer but we signed him for five years, not five weeks or five months.

I won’t wait five years to judge him but nor will I after five weeks. And if we need a very recent reminder of why we shouldn’t judge players early in their Rangers career I suggest Calvin Bassey.

I give you a cup tie at St Mirren and I certainly remember a lot of negative noise about young Calvin and questioning of young Calvin. Look at him now. Another valid point around transfer windows that is often missed it is not exclusive to new signings. What about investing in the existing squad – the squad that got us to a European final.

There was some negative noise about giving some players of a certain age new contracts. It’s not as if the board makes these decisions in a vacuum.

The board is listening to Gio and Ross and taking recommendations be they new players or existing squad players.

I look at the Napoli game and some of these players that we gave new contracts to – the goalkeeper, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield more than played their part in what was a Rangers performance although not a Rangers result.

I listened to the vice-captain who said it’s the strongest squad he has been involved in since he has been at Rangers and that’s a player who never misses a training session and sees them every day. The manager says he is happy with the squad too and I trust his judgement.

I also believe this is the strongest squad since I have been at Rangers. It’s September let’s see how things develop.”

Nine points and 27 points behind going to Celtic Park on Saturday John.

5 minutes– I learned lots ago not to judge new players within weeks…
