Michael Stewart didn’t hold back as he watched Connor Goldson’s attempts to foul Aberdeen forward Duk at Ibrox yesterday.

Matching the pathetic defending of the former Shrewsbury starlet was the blanket refusal of John Beaton to apply the Laws of the Game.

Over about three seconds in clear view of the referee Goldson was fouling his opponent, eventually turning to a rugby tackle on the forward when all else had failed.

Beaton, his assistant on the Main Stand side of the pitch and Steven Kirkland on VAR duty all ignored the Laws of the Game.

With Celtic going in front at Tynecastle on route to retaining the SPFL title it seems like the SFA officials didn’t want to inflict any more suffering on the home fans at Ibrox.

Since January 2022 no Scottish referee has awarded a penalty against the Ibrox club, a run of over 50 matches. In 10 UEFA matches this season four penalties were awarded by neutral referees.

Beaton has played a prominent part in the penalty-less run, in January at Ibrox he refused Celtic a penalty when Goldson raised two hands to block a shot from Carl Starfelt.

Last night Beaton was believed to be reviewing the incident with friends in Bellshill, last Sunday he appeared from somewhere to take over from Willie Collum on fourth official duties in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden.
