Even by football standards it was a remarkable u-turn, or climbdown.

Without being questioned about him, after beating Aberdeen last Sunday Micky Beale decided to trash the professionalism of Alfredo Morelos while allowing others to question the judgement of the rookie boss.

Being in condition and putting in the effort are the absolute essentials of professional sport, form can be variable, even when you are picking up £30,000 a week from your employer.

Beale went out of his way to criticise Morelos. By highlighting the lack of energy shown by the striker he confirmed the views of opposing fans who have been calling out El Buffalo out all season long.

Five days later, without a game being played and with four meaningless matches left this season Beale transformed himself into Mr Motivator.

Beale’s explanation to The Sun will have more than just the Ibrox players doubting every word that comes out the mouth of Gary McAllister’s former assistant, the master of bibs and cones:

When he plays, he plays with passion and he tries and runs well in training. Maybe last week he was a bit disappointed he didn’t start and he came on and that happens at times.

You’re dealing with young men with a lot of emotions. But there’s no issue. Wherever he’s going, he’ll want to go in fine form and in a good place.

Those quotes suggest that Beale hasn’t been paying attention over the last six months, or he is just serving up the same porkies that he delivered to QPR fans before jumping ship.
