The Sun has killed off the fantasies of thousands of bears by revealing that Graeme Souness WON’T be taking up any role at Ibrox.

With Sky Sports recently ending his contract as a pundit the former Newcastle boss has been eyed as a saviour by the Gullible & Deluded with a variety of roles suggested as well as heading up a consortium of wealthy investors.

Facing UEFA’s new Financial Sustainability Regulations John Bennett has no option but to implement a programme of austerity at Ibrox which will force Micky Beale to rake through the Championship for free agents.

It is a far cry from bringing current England internationalists to Ibrox as Souness did in the eighties but alas The Sun has pulled the plug on a rerun of 1986 which brought in the only decade since the fifties that Celtic didn’t dominate in terms of trophies:

SunSport understands that the speculation is wide of the mark and Souness WON’T be making a sensational return to the club which he left 32 years ago.

On the future structure of the club, manager Michael Beale said: “What’s important is that if John Bennett (chairman) and the rest of the board think they need someone safeguarding the club that it’s done.

“It’s about the continuity of the club and going in the direction the board wants. I think it’s important the board decides what is right for their club. “

There’s no doubting Souness’ credentials as a supporter.

Taken from his native Edinburgh for big European nights as a child by his brother Bill, he said in the lead-up to last year’s Europa League final: “I vividly remember going with a Union Jack draped across my shoulders to show my support and enjoy the special atmosphere on those nights under the lights.

The club that Souness walked away from in April 1991 left us all in 2012 when Her Majesty rejected a CVA with 267 creditors left to scrap over the carcass.

In his last on field involvement with Scottish football Souness watched Blackburn Rovers lose to Celtic home and away in the UEFA Cup.

While in management Souness concluded transfer deals with his close friend Dave Murray to sign Tugay, Barry Ferguson, Craig Moore and Jean-Alain Boumsong.

Since the Boumsong dead and the Stevens report Souness hasn’t been directly involved in football.

He also did some training with Celtic in the late 60s. But he plays to the gallery and he always has. ‘Only An Excuse’ recognised that back in the 80s, when it was still on the radio and still funny, doing a gag about him saying “As a lifelong Liverpool fan, who always supported Middlesbrough, I used to sneak out of school to go to Italy and watch Sampdoria, but I couldn’t forget that while I was still a foetus, I was an avid Rangers fan”.
