Wait for it- Ange puts defender decision on hold

Ange Postecoglou has still to decide on the future of Liam Scales.

The defender has literally had a roller-coaster spell on loan at Aberdeen, experiencing some desperate results under Jim Goodwin then playing a key role in the revival under Barry Robson that leaves the Dons strong favourites to finish in third place.

Celtic paid around £500,000 to sign Scales from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021, after five SPFL appearances last season it was obvious that he’d need to look elsewhere for more regular first team football.

Playing on the left of a back three under Robson the 24-year-old has enjoyed success but it is in a position that doesn’t exist at Celtic where Ange Postecoglou uses a back four with inverted full-backs.

Scales still has two years to run on his Celtic contract with Postecoglou diplomatic when he spoke to the Daily Record about what is in store for the Irishman:

We’ll wait until the summer. It’s good to see Liam doing so well at Aberdeen. When you put guys out on loan you hope they get good experience and make an impact. Liam has done that and I know Barry Robson and the club have been really happy with hm.

But those decisions will be made at the end of the year. We’ll see what’s best for him and the club. The guys will all need some sort of clarity moving forward. We will look at them all on an individual basis. We’ll get to that when the time is right.

With Greg Taylor enjoying an outstanding season the only likely opening at Celtic for Scales would appear to be on the left side of central defence.
