David Tanner carried out an incredible hatchet job on Ange Postecoglou on TalkSPORT this morning.

Just before 9am on the Breakfast show with Tony Cascarino and Natalie Sawyer the former Sky Sports anchor man let it all hang out as he discussed the likely departure of the hoops boss for Spurs.

Two years of uninterrupted pain have been inflicted on Tanner as he has hung on the fringes, reluctantly covering Celtic’s successes under Postecoglou.

It sounded like the sort of conversation that you’d get in the locker-room at Morningside Bowling Club as they cursed Celtic surpassing the domestic trophy count of Rangers who died during Tanner’s stint in London with Sky Sport.

In the final nine minutes of the podcast Tanner really got going:

After it we spoke to Ange. Of course he might never win another trophy again, particularly if he goes to Tottenham, no offence to Tottenham. So that message (enjoy the night) he is quite right about that.

This was very much a guy, I thought that was very emotional, a bit nippy with the press at times, he’s not a man that likes to be questioned, em, can be quite sensitive to criticism, but he was very clear in his message to enjoy tonight. Tomorrow……………. I’m off which is probably what he means

Tony Cascarino then asked about the revival in Joe Hart’s career which was a prompt for Tanner to really get into his message-board stride:

You know I think that there has been a lot of hype about Ange Postecoglou, he has been painted as some sort of Messiah and frankly I’ve never known a more over-hyped manager than Ange Postecoglou.

He has done a terrific job but he has not reinvented football, this stuff about Angeball, much of it is Angebull, it is the high press that frankly every Celtic manager has invented in the last few years.

Jock Stein was doing it before any of them. But what I will say is, em his signings have been terrific.

Tanner claimed that Joe Hart is England’s most capped goalkeeper, perhaps after Saturday night Peter Shilton had escaped is memory.

Natalie Sawyer then came in about Postecoglou being over-hyped and asked if ‘Are you then saying that this link to Tottenham is a bit over the top and that he isn’t good enough for Tottenham?’

Tanner came back with

Well it’s Celtic’s fifth treble in seven years, so em, the DNA at the club, they had an awful season when Steven Gerrard’s Rangers won the title three years ago (it was two David) when Scott Brown, their influential captain had just reached the end of the road. Em, they did need a rebuild and I think that it is hugely important to say that this man has come in with great signings and a lot of these players he knew himself, there’s a lot of phoney-baloney at football clubs about who’s signing players, even the word ‘Recruitment’ makes it sound like an HR process but his signings have been terrific, Kyogo- he scored his 34th goal of the season yesterday, Jota scored as well, Liel Abada scored as well so the three players that scored were his signings, people he hand-picked himself so that is important.

But in terms of what has to be better, and this I feel is something that should concern Tottenam fans, they should at least ask some questions, anyway is that Ange in Europe has been awful. This season in the Champions League Celtic picked up two points, now it was hailed as a victory for attractive football, it wasn’t, listen I know that they had Real Madrid in their group, I must be clear about that and it was compared to Rangers who had the worst ever performance in the Champions League at the same time.

After a rant about Celtic in Europe under Ange Tanner admitted; ‘By the way, I won’t be popular for saying that. Such is the hype surrounding the man,  there is a great slogan at Celtic ‘We Never Stop’, and it’s a slogan that has become a way to live under Ange, and as I say they have been terrific but that is something that has been a problem for them’.

Surely that must get this James Hunt BARRED from getting inside our stadium for life.

Ange Postecoglou would be a fool to ignore any approach which offers his family financial security for life. He was respectful in waiting (for cup final) and there’s no done deal as yet, as far as I can see. Whether he’s been offered an improved contract in the last year would be interesting. We must agree that European performances were strictly monotone and predictable, otherwise winning a treble is genuinely phenomenal. He’d do well in the EPL with the resources their clubs have, assuming there’s no panic in the first six months.
I wouldn’t imagine he is not Spurs’ no.1 target but then he wasn’t at Celtic either.
