Stephen McGowan has added Graham Potter to the short-list of potential Celtic managers.

Late on Tuesday night four names were listed that didn’t include the former Brighton and Chelsea boss who was one of the brightest stars in English football a year ago.

Taking over from Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea seemed like a golden opportunity but it quickly turned sour with his reign at Stamford Bridge lasting just 31 matches.

Potter was sacked by Chelsea on April 3, while he will have the consolation of a lucrative severance payment but will be looking for a route back into management for next season.

Celtic have provided Brendan Rodgers and Postecoglou with a route to trophies and an EPL management job which could appeal to Potter, late this afternoon the Daily Mail reported:

Celtic are drawing up a list of candidates for the manager’s position, with a club statement vowing to prioritise the right appointment instead of making a quick one.

Sources close to Manchester City assistant manager Enzo Maresca say he will blank any conversation over a move to Glasgow until Saturday’s Champions League final is done and dusted.

Also coming under consideration are Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter, Jesse Marsch and Bodo/Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen.

Davie Moyes was on McGowan’s earlier list but appears to have been replaced by Potter.

Celtic will start pre-season training at the end of this month with their first friendly taking place on July 19 when they face Yokohama F Marinos, Postecoglou’s former club.

“…with a club statement vowing to prioritise the right appointment instead of making a quick one.”

Six weeks of speculation then Neil Lennon it is.

  • Johnno says:

Although I believe Potter would be a very decent manager for ourselves, we will still have the lure of the EPL hanging over us.

Believe that if we really intend to get back to being competitive within CL then a reliable manager that’s in for the long haul remains key for ourselves.
We are always going to be a club that will involve players turning around very quickly, but don’t see why a manager has to remain in that same boat.

Players can tend to be a bit more robotic nowadays with playing to strict instructions.
We as a team still need to improve upon getting the balance right between our use of the ball in possession and shape without it especially within the higher level that CL brings.

Stability within the squad may need to be formed again but nothing like where lenny left us.

A good knowledge with plenty of experience of the game with decent game management would be a added bonus with the 5 sub rule in play nowadays.

Someone who ticks them boxes far more than Potter would be David moyes imo, and fully expecting it to be his last game for west ham tomorrow night regardless of the result.

May not be a popular choice but believe he would be well capable of handling the job in hand

  • John Copeland says:

I’m surprised MC Gowan hasn’t named wee wink Martindale as his 5th choice potential next Celtic boss ! After all he is the quintessential ‘in the know ‘ sports scoop in Scotland…. Isn’t he ? Just wait till Jackson gets started on the speculation ! It’s only a matter of time …

  • Joe Brannan says:

Out of all the names put forward so far Enzo Maresca is the only one who seems to be able to generate any confidence for me, but I would like to see Martin O’Neil come back in on interim basis (at least) until the right manager has been selected.
It would be great if Martin did take over, a class act, loads of experience, treble winner, loved by supporters, European experience, honest and trustworthy, not too many around who could meet or fit this description. HH

Why has there been no thought about Steve Clarke the SCOTTISH national team

  • the maister says:

If Celtic can’t hold Postecogolu, then we are sure to get a cheap option in!

  • the maister says:

We get it wrong and sevco can win the Treble!
