Celtic linked with second Manchester United transfer target

Celtic have been linked with an interest in Donny van de Beek.

The midfielder has endured three miserable seasons at Manchester United where he has drifted further down the pecking order under a variety of managers.

Since his £35m move from Ajax in 2020 van de Beek has started six EPL games for Manchester United and five during an equally unproductive loan spell at Everton.

With two years left to run on his contract United are keen to get the Dutchman off the payroll one way or another with Celtic casually thrown into a report from 90min:

Van de Beek has a number of clubs in Serie A interested in his services, with Inter, Roma and Milan all making their own enquiries, though it’s understood he is not a first choice target for any of the three. In the Premier League, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are all monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation.

Europa League holders Sevilla and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Nice hold interest, as does Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic. A return to Ajax has not been ruled out either and Dutch champions Feyenoord would also be open to accommodating the player on the right terms.

United would prefer a sale as they try to clear their squad of players who aren’t in the long-term plans for the first team, though a loan looks more likely as it stands.

Celtic have been linked with Scott McTominay which is marginally more credible but it is quite a stretch to see the club invest in a player who has barely kicked a ball in the last three years. On wages that would be significantly higher than any current Celtic plater.

Equally there might be some appeal to the midfielder about being involved in the Champions League but options in Spain or Italy are likely to carry more appeal.

Even if Manchester United were to heavily subsidise a transfer or loan it would be a high risk move to try and integrate van de Beek into a domestic set up where Celtic enjoy more than 65% possession in most games with an expectation to win every domestic fixture.

Come on if this was sevco linked with this player we would be pissing ourselves laughing,we have already done that with some of the signings they have done already who haven’t kick a ball in 3 seasons, let’s not go there.

I see on the Celtic blog James Forrest is willing to take a punt the Man U player linked with us,I’m very disappointed in Forrest’s take on this.
Forrest is one of the biggest critics of sevco for signing DUFF players like this with a nickel&dime profile so why should we as fans be accepting it when they are mentioned about coming to us.
This has big Shirley stamped all over should this move take place.
