Jonny Evans is not a signing target for Brendan Rodgers despite the mutual respect between the two men.

The two Irishman were side by side for for years at Leicester before Rodgers left the club at the start of April, with his contract expired the former Manchester United defender is now a free agent.

First time around Rodgers called in Kolo Toure as an emergency signing with the former Liverpool defender steering Celtic through a very tough Champions League qualifier away to Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Toure took on a coaching role at Celtic then followed Rodgers to Leicester before a brief and unsuccessful stint in charge of Wigan Athletic.

Evans shouldn’t be short of offers from EPL clubs but according to Football Scotland there won’t be anything coming in from the newly appointed Celtic boss:

Jonny Evans is not a Celtic transfer target this summer despite his strong relationship with Brendan Rodgers.

The former Leicester City defender is on the hunt for a new club after leaving the Foxes and it was suggested last week that his former manager, Rodgers, was hoping to entice him to join the Hoops. But Football Scotland understands there has been no approach from the club to player this summer as he trains with Manchester United with their squad in a bid to keep fit for the upcoming campaign ahead.

Evans, Football Scotland understands, has a great personal relationship with his Northern Ireland countryman Rodgers and there remains a respect between the two from their time down south.

But a deal won’t be done this summer to take the 35-year-old to Glasgow as it’s believed he wants to remain in England.

Mark Hendry is the author of that report, in June of last year he was first to report on Celtic’s interest in Alexandro Bernabei.

Cameron Carter-Vickers injury causes a problem for Rodgers, as well as missing a key player it highlights the lack of depth in that area of the park.

Without the former Spurs defender Carl Starfelt doesn’t look the same player, in the final month of the season neither Yuki Kobayashi or Tomoki Iwata suggested that they are comfortable in the Celtic defence.

Ange Postecoglou appeared unconvinced by Stephen Welsh but with Carter-Vickers missing the former Scotland u-21 captain may get a chance to impress in pre-season.

Thank goodness. A thirty-five year old Centre Half is what we do not need!
A paper story, you can see how it was fabricated.
Brendan Rodgers, Johnnie Evans, Celtic, Story! I didn’t think Kobayashi looked out of place at all!
On the contrary, I think if he is handled properly by Management, he will turn out to be a player for us!
A five year contract would kind of signify that!
