Liam Shaw’s bizarre Celtic career appears to be coming to an end with Wigan keen to sign the midfielder.

After failing to make any permanent signings during the January 2021 Transfer Window the hoops moved in with a pre-contract deal to sign the midfielder from Sheffield Wednesday in an attempt to show some forward planning.

Wednesday were heading for relegation from The Championship on the back of financial problems and registered their unhappiness at Celtic’s approach.

Soon after announcing Shaw’s four year contract Neil Lennon resigned as the lockdown season reached new levels of farce.

Ange Postecoglou had little option but to play Shaw in a few pre-season matches but even with Scott Brown, Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham leaving in a variety of fashions Shaw found himself behind Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic, Ismaila Soro, Tom Rogic and James McCarthy in the battle for midfield places.

At the start of December he played well in the dead-rubber Europa League win over Real Betis and picked up a League Cup winners medal from the bench against Hibs then made his second and final Celtic appearance, coming off the bench for 10 minutes away to St Mirren before Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Yosuke Ideguchi arrived in January.

A loan spell at Motherwell was followed by spending last season at Morecambe, while they were relegated to League Two it seems that Shaun Maloney saw enough to offer the midfielder a move to Wigan who are among the favourites to win promotion to The Championship despite starting the season with a six point penalty for financial issues.

Another Lawwell bonus punt. More proof that he should be nowhere near ANY signing business. If only we could be confident that that’s the case.
