Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he has held transfer talks with Aberdeen over Liam Scales.

The defender spent the whole of last season at Pittodrie experiencing the highs and lows under two managers as the Dons went from losing at Darvel in the Scottish Cup to clinching third place in the SPFL and guaranteed group stage football this season.

Scales has returned to Celtic with priceless experience but still has an uphill task to force his way near to a first team place.

Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers remain the first pick central defenders with £4m Pole Maik Nawrocki now pushing for a place.

Scales now has a new manager to make an impression on with Rodgers forced through injuries into playing the former Shamrock Rovers man for the full 90 minutes of today’s draw with Wolves.

Discussing the new season prospects for the 25-year-old, the Celtic boss told The Sun:

Liam’s excellent and I really like him. He’s an intelligent boy. He’s come over, obviously gone out to Aberdeen on loan and done really well. He’ll be at an age where he’ll want to play.

I just think you need to have a strong squad. You have to make sure you have the depth there.

I would think Aberdeen are keen to have him back. I’ve obviously had a couple of conversations with Barry but we’re in no rush, I’ll just assess it and see where it is. We’ll take it from there.

As the only naturally left sided central defender available to Rodgers the Irishman could be in for some early involvement when the new season gets underway.

  • Stesano says:

Keep him for left back for back up at least to a new one as wee Taylor again showed him can’t cope physicaky against decent teams and his direct opponent, sure he a good guy but we need way better especially for Europe but even domestic wise as you saw what the Dutch lad at Motherwell did to him last year from halfway to! Turned him inside out! So not nearly good enough

Agree about Taylor…falls short imo…As for Scales…today proved to me what I said on here last week…I’d definitely keep him…
