Brendan Rodgers gets welcome injury boost

Alistair Johnston is on course to give Celtic a defensive boost just as Brendan Rodgers’ options are closing down.

Last Sunday at Aberdeen Cameron Carter-Vickers lasted 45 minutes before suffering a hamstring injury, his replacement Stephen Welsh suffered ankle ligament damage in training that will see him out of action for three to four months.

Topping it all off, on Sunday recent signing Maik Nawrocki suffered a hamstring injury that looks like ruling him out of the weekend clash against St Johnstone and probably the Glasgow Derby on September 3.

Discussing the injury situation and options going forward, last night The Sun reported:

Japanese utility man Tomoki Iwata can also operate in central defence, while Alistair Johnston has played there for Canada.

But the Hoops right-back has yet to make a first-team return from his close-season ankle operation. Johnston trained towards the end of last week and could feature against St Johnstone this weekend.

So far Brendan Rodgers hasn’t been able to select Johnston but it seems like the former Montreal defender is making a very timely return from injury.

Signed in time to make his debut in the January 2 Glasgow Derby at Ibrox Johnston stepped instantly into the boots of Josip Juranovic until he was struck by injury in the Scottish Cup semi final although he did return in time to complete his medal collection in the final two matches of last season.
