The remarkable transformation of Stephen Welsh

Over the last week Stephen Welsh has been back in the spotlight- making his first competitive appearance since October then signing a new, extended contract.

There was something different about him that most probably put down to the infrequency of appearances last season.

Welsh had popped up almost out of nowhere in February 2020 away to Hamilton Accies then resurfaced through some of the darker days of the Lockdown season, finishing the season as Kris Ajer’s regular defensive partner.

That seems like a lifetime away, yesterday as the cameras focussed on him at training it was clear how much Welsh has been working out over the course of this year.

Unfortunately a leg injury in training has ruled Welsh out of tomorrow’s match at Kilmarnock but the new contract does suggest that he is in the mix to play in the season ahead.

Alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, currently injured, there is a vacancy in the Celtic defence. Welsh, Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke seem to offer the quality and depth needed for the challenges coming up as soon as next month.
