They both started their senior careers at Norwich City but that is about the only similarity in the careers of Todd Cantwell and Chris Sutton.

After starring in a UEFA Cup run that included a 5-1 win away to Bayern Munich Sutton joined Blackburn Rovers for a record transfer fee, played for England, won the EPL then starred in a dominant Celtic side alongside Henrik Larsson.

Cantwell was returned to Norwich from a loan spell at Bournemouth, slipped out the door for a token fee to Ibrox where he starred alongside Nico Raskin as they watched Celtic complete a world record eighth treble.

For reasons known only to himself Cantwell sees himself as an A-List influencer on social media, playing to the gallery and taking exception to a pundit that is paid for his opinions by Sky Sports, BBC Five Live, the Daily Mail and Daily Record.

After being informed that he is an attention seeker that criticises Cantwell to remain relevant, Sutton took to the Daily Mail to deliver some home truths to the former Norwich starlet:

I read some of his quotes about Norwich City. The five managers previous to Michael Beale, they all discarded Todd. Why did they discard Todd?

Something must be up. You fall out with one manager, you think well maybe one manager could be wrong. Then you think could two managers be wrong? OK, well we’ll give him that. Should we even give him three managers? If we’re being generous but five managers all thought the same thing about him.

So when is the penny going to drop and is Todd actually going to take some responsibility for his own actions? Do your talking on the pitch.

You have to maintain that form and he didn’t do that. Nobody has a divine right to play in a team or not play for a team because you played in the 23s when you were 16 years old.

All these managers would have picked a fit and firing Todd Cantwell if he was playing well enough. Are they all wrong? Why is Todd always the victim in these circumstances? Just a little bit of self-reflection.

The fact he talks about himself in the third person tells you all you need to know about him. I mean, who does that? And then the “Bayern Munich nearly signed me”. Well, I nearly flew to the moon!’

Sky Sports won’t be covering the Philippe Clement Revolution until November 12 when Cantwell and his pals visit Livingston.

With Sutton’s comments appearing online and in the main edition of the Daily Mail his views will be read and taken on board by fans, players and manager in England, closing more doors to the misunderstood soccer genius.
