Charlie Mulgrew made an unexpected appearance at Lennoxtown this morning as Celtic stepped up their Champions League preparations to face Lazio.

The defender enjoyed two playing stints for the hoops, playing a major role in five title wins before going on to Blackburn Rovers and Dundee United.

After leaving Tannadice he had offers to continue playing but opted to retire and is currently involved in some media work while exploring coaching opportunities, recently spending time with Russell Martin at Southampton.

Mulgrew left Celtic just as Brendan Rodgers arrived first time around with the Irishman having an open door to allow other coaches in to see his players in training.

Living nearby in Kirkintilloch it would have been a short journey for the former Celtic and Scotland defender to make as he prepares to take the step into coaching.

Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea are both involved with the Celtic B team but if either of them was to move on it could provide an opening for Mulgrew who turned 37 in March.
