Bosun Lawal scored his first goal in senior football last night as Fleetwood Town won 2-1 away at Reading in League One.

The defender moved out on loan during the summer transfer window but barely a month after joining Fleetwood manager Scott Brown was sacked.

That could have made things fairly awkward but last night the Irishman was switched to right-back and didn’t take long to make his mark as the Fleetwood website reported:

Fleetwood Town’s first-ever meeting with Reading ended in a 2-1 win at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Tuesday evening.

A strike you can only dream off kicked off the clash by defender Bosun Lawal opened the scoring, with Dom Ballard netting from two yards to cancel that in the second half, but the action wasn’t done there as an added time winner was found by Town skipper Josh Vela.

It was the start of dreams for Lee Johnson’s side as they found themselves a goal up less than two minutes into the game when Lawal decided to try his luck from range and the strike rifled into the bottom corner, marking his first professional goal in style.

That win was a genuine six pointer, lifting Fleetwood five points ahead of second bottom Reading and three behind fifth bottom Carlisle who have played two matches more.

The change in manager is an occupational hazard and gives Lawal and Adam Montgomery the chance to prove themselves again in a very competitive league.

Lawal joined Celtic from Watford in the summer of 2021, it is doubtful how much he benefited from playing in the Lowland League but in League One he has the chance to accelerate his development.

There was a downside with Lawal injured and substituted in the 75th minute, after his goal he’ll be keen to be back playing at Barnsley on Saturday.
