Michael Nicholson has washed his hands over the appointment of Mark Lawwell as Celtic’s Head of First Team Recruitment and Scouting.

It seems that the club has been left in the lurch by the big, bad Australian that ran away and strangely didn’t want to take Lawwell Jr with him to Spurs.

In May 2022 the Celtic website broke the news:

Celtic Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Lawwell as Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

Mark joins Celtic from his position as Head of CFG Scouting and Recruitment, within City Football Group’s global structure, having spent the last 10 years there.

There is no evidence of Lawwell having such a senior job in the City Football Group, there is no mention of him on the CFG website and no mention of where he was employed before landing such a prime job. According to his Linkedin profile Mark was actually working for Manchester City.

Tuning in from the back of the room was Daily Record blogger Ben Banks who reported:

But McHugh’s not done there.

He asks why the chairman’s son mark is head of recruitment.

Nicholson replies that it was Ange who advised Mark Lawwell to take on the role. Only man Ange wanted was Lawwell and Nicholson asks Joe if he’d like to ask Ange about that…

So the CEO of Celtic allowed a manager 10 months in the job, on a 12 month rolling contract to appoint the son of the club’s former CEO to a critical job.

No recruitment process was involved, mirroring the notorious Hampden Showers deal of May 2019, no other candidates considered.

Since taking up the job Lawwell Jr has signed up one player, Alistair Johnston that was first team ready.

The others all fit the project profile. Luis Palma looks a player but isn’t an upgrade on last season’s wingers, Yang HHyun-Jun has some skills but Marco Tilio and Kwon Hyeok-kyu look unlikely to ever start a serious match as Celtic players.

All of the projects are sitting on four and five year contracts, moving them on will be much tougher than enticing them in from the Korean Second Division.

2016 Lawwell Mini is ‘scouting and information content manager at City’.

You could write for smsm with that kind of spite you have for celtic

Editor: There are shades of opinion outside of CQN #LawwellFamily

You’re either as thick as a breeze block or you have an agenda.
Joe provides us with all sorts of terrific content and visibly stands up for SUPPORTERS of Celtic FC and you throw in that snide comment? I’m guessing the “c” in your moniker is just 4 letters long…….and “Marky” should have a similar “c” after his comment.
Celtic PLC regularly lies to us supporters and Joe tries to hold them to account and you clowns think that’s bad? Joe is doing honestly what the media SHOULD do but don’t.
Get behind him in his work or GTF the pair of you.
In fact just GTF and tell Peter & Son we can see right through you, both of you.

      • TicToc says:

David c***, I thought I invited you to fukk off, why are you still here?
BTW, I suppose you think it’s okay whilst the vast majority are struggling to make ends meet that the PLC Board give themselves pay rises for running a small company badly? CEO goes from over half a million (just let that sink in) to nearly three-quarters of a million and for what exactly? They never stand up to the stinking masonic shambles that is Scottish football but they’re delighted to raid the biscuit tin for themselves? UTTER SCUM, that’s what they are.
I’ll waste no more time on you, you’re a lost cause.

Tillio is just in the door. Give him a chance ffs.

  • Marky says:

I was always told to stick the knife in as deep as possible BEFORE turning it. What a poor piece, ML has done a more than decent job in identifying players. We’ve a bloated squad, that’s true but over the next 2 windows this will be vastly trimmed after which I would expect [hopefully] the marquee signings we deserved THIS summer to impact on our 3rd in a row UEFA CL joust in Europe! Try the fcuk to be a BIT positive ffs!

Editor: You do know who is responsible for the bloated squad, the guy that has been Head of Recruitment over the last three windows. He brought in Siegrist, Bernabei, Haksabanovic, Kobayashi, Iwata, Tilio, Kwon, Lagerbielke. It will be an expensive job trimming them from the squad, they won’t get the same salary on offer elsewhere, not many players will take a pay cut to get playing again.

  • Sophie Johnstone says:

Tillio hasn’t kicked a ball in anger for us yet you have written him off just like that, least give the lad a chance see what he can do before deciding his career at Celtic is done.

Editor: When is he ever going to get a chance to play- should others be dropped to find out if a Lawwell project is actually any good? This team needs signings that can go straight in and improve the team. Should Kwon also be given a couple of matches? It is about winning matches not finding out if dubious signings are actually any good- they prove themselves.

It’s not what you know It’s who you know, and as for his Da he is nothing but a LIAR worse than a politician, and a FAT GREEDY B*****D licking the ARSE off sevco.

  • Terence Nova says:

In my opinion …that response quite clearly shows the contempt that the Board has for decent, caring supporters…Shocking to say the least…but to be expected.

  • Pcelt says:

Jobs for the boys and more contempt from directors, if his job at city group was not as described- which should be easy to confirm- then he should be sacked for misleading the club, his father who acts like he owns the club should never have been brought back.
