Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Celtic must take something from tomorrow’s match in Madrid to retain an interest in European football this season.

Once again there has been promising periods in matches, signs of development but a lack of points from a Champions League campaign.

Two red cards away to Feyenoord was followed by the pain of conceding a 95th minute winner at home to Lazio.

Pride was salvaged at home to Atletico Madrid a fortnight ago but only one point left Celtic adrift at the bottom of their group with Lazio three points ahead and up on the head-to-head after their win in Glasgow.

Spain has never been a happy hunting ground for Celtic sides with Rodgers fully aware of the scale of the challenge his side faces on Tuesday night.

The Daily Record reports the Celtic boss saying:

We’ve played well in the three games and as each game has gone on, the level of performance has been better. We haven’t had the breaks that we probably wanted from the games but in terms of performance level – in particular the last game – we’ve been very, very good.

But we’re under no illusions. We understand we’re coming to a fantastic stadium to play against a really good team. We’re really excited by that challenge.

We’re not daft either. We know this is a game we want to get a positive result in to take into the final two games.

Next up after tomorrow’s clash is a trip to Rome to face Lazio.
