Celtic summer signing makes unexpected loan move

Image for Celtic summer signing makes unexpected loan move

With no competitive appearances since signing in the summer from Buson Ipark, Kwon Hyeok-kyu has moved to St Mirren on loan for the remainder of the season.

The midfielder played in pre-season friendlies against Wolves and Athletic Bilbao but has only had a few listings on the substitute bench since the competitive action started.

Injury to Reo Hatate opened up a place in the Celtic midfield but after David Turnbull, Tomoki Iwata and Odin Thiago Holm were given chances it seems that Paulo Bernardo is now in possession of the place alongside Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley.

With Hatate now back to full fitness it is clear that Kwon’s prospects for the second half of the season were unlikely to improve.

Stephen Robinson has made St Mirren a credible force with the Paisley side in contention for another top six finish.

Kwon will have a battle on his hands to get into the St Mirren side but it will give him and Celtic the opportunity to assess his suitability for playing in the Scottish game.
