Portuguese update on Celtic’s Araujo interest

It is being reported in Portugal that Celtic haven’t contacted Estoril to discuss the transfer of Tiago Araujo.

Back in November Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail and others flagged up the defender as a potential transfer target but it seems that interest has cooled off on the former Benfica defender.

This morning respected Portuguese publisher O Jogo reported:

Tiago Araújo’s good season has aroused the greed of some European clubs and one of them is Celtic.

This interest is not new and has already been reported, but the Scottish Press guarantees that the Glasgow team continues to keep an eye on the 22-year-old left-back.

According to the same sources, he is preparing a proposal to present to the Canarian SAD.

From what O JOGO found, Estoril’s officials have not yet been contacted by the British club and do not intend to release the defender for less than four million euros, especially because half of the pass belongs to Benfica.

Judging those comments it seems that there is no serious interest in Araujo from Celtic beyond claims in November that he was a potential signing. Effectively Ojogo is following up on the early claims with no concrete developments to report on this month.

With a third of the transfer window completed it is likely that some detailed discussions would have been held with clubs and agents to sound out how likely a January move is.

After 18 months at Estoril there doesn’t appear to be any serious evidence that Araujo is an upgrade on Greg Taylor, with Alexandro Bernabei already at the club 4m euros would be a lot of budget being spent on a back up option when Rodgers is clearly in need of arrivals capable of making an instant improvement on the team.
