Graeme Souness has branded the top two clubs in the SPFL Premiership as bang average.

The former Ibrox boss was in the Directors Box for the December Glasgow Derby which Celtic won 2-1 with no away fans inside the ground.

On Tuesday night a home win for Philippe Clement’s side will draw them level with Celtic at the top of the Premiership table which looks like setting up a tense run in to the title with two Derby matches still to be played.

Normally that sort of battle would be welcomed across the media but after more than 30 years away from Scotland Souness has a more detached outlook and isn’t impressed by the quality that he is watching.

Picking up on his appearance on TalkSPORT this morning the Daily Record reports the former Rangers boss saying:

I am going to be brutally honest, Jeff, they are two bang average Rangers and Celtic teams, at this moment in time.

I’ve seen some good ones, I’ve seen some indifferent ones, both teams, right now, I think I am being fair, are average at this moment in time. We played in some good Rangers and Celtic teams who could compete with the English. We knocked Leeds out and Celtic had some great runs and beat Blackburn and Liverpool.

It’s due to finance, finance is 99 per cent of it here, that’s a million miles away. If they did get in the leagues it would take them a while. But with the support they’ve got, if they could survive and take their time getting up there, they would be fine. But I don’t see it happening because there are too many obstacles.

This week English viewers will get the chance to assess the two title contenders when Sky Sports show them live in midweek, Aberdeen visiting Ibrox on Tuesday with Celtic at Easter Road the following night.

For once I agree with Souness ! Whilst Celtic’ s problems are highly self inflicted ,the tribute act’ s manager is getting the ‘ second coming ‘ treatment from the nodding dogs SMSM . That’s fine by me as I know that Clement is NOT a next level manager as they all give him over hyped credit for .There is one thing that will separate both come May …..every possible favourable decision imaginable and then some shall be afforded to the tribute act from every official in its quest to land the £60 million CL bounty . I mean help from governing bodies , match and VAR officials and every conceivable institution in the country desperate to see their pet project win . Let’s call it …operation nod and a wink !

He only managed to win a few trophies with Rangers (as they were known as then) with a cripple’s money that he stole…

    Let’s never forget that !

Glad he was there to see sevco humped. Filthy Pig!
£450 000 from good old ebt, was it?
I don’t think they will invite his pals back to Manchester for a long, long time!

Editor: It was only £30,000 recorded but the principle of a manager at one club being paid by another is the point. Souness had a strong record of buying players from Rangers while at Blackburn and Newcastle- his last job in football.
