Steve Clarke has added to the confusion over Callum McGregor’s injury.

The Celtic captain has missed the last two hoops matches after being substituted at half time during the 7-1 victory over Dundee.

At the time there was no great alarm over McGregor but two days later he was missing from training and the defeat against Hearts.

After undergoing scans on the calf/achilles issue Brendan Rodgers reported that the results were inconclusive with the midfielder already ruled out of Saturday’s home match against St Johnstone.

That match is followed by an international break, asked about the absence of the Celtic skipper from the squad The Scotsman reports Steve Clarke saying:

I had a brief chat with Callum with this week because I knew he was going to be missing this camp, but no big issues moving forward, I don’t think.

That last comment will cause a little concern for Celtic fans who realise the importance of their club captain.

A number of last season’s most important players have left the club, when McGregor, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate are out injured the Celtic side is suddenly very light on experience.

There is unlikely to be any update on McGregor’s fitness before Rodgers holds a media conference on Friday.
