The frightening economics of Celtic’s transfer activity

According to one calculation Celtic have spent £1m for each £8.8m that they have received this summer.

That balance is what you would expect from a club conducting a fire sale, not the self-celebrating most admired club in Europe.

Among their cronies, messengers, sycophants and hangers-on the Celtic board are doing an incredible job, delivering domestic success while generating huge profits with the treasured Bank Balance standing at around 70-80% of turnover.

No wonder Celtic are HMRC’s favourite club.

Elsewhere in football. clubs are juggling all sorts of metrics to stay on the right side of Financial Sustainability Rules, except for clubs in Scotland.

One club spends with abandon waiting on further bail outs while another sells players for top dollar, attempts to replace them by low-balling while whispering to their messengers that it is a notoriously difficult time to do  business.

So far in the transfer window Celtic have sold Nicolas Kuhn for £17m and Gus Lagerbielke for £2m.

They have also picked up a sell on clause on Jeremie Frimpong’s sale from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool with many websites claiming that Celtic were due 30% of the profit made by the German club.

That claim/clause seems highly unlikely, the standard sell on is for 10%. Celtic signed Frimpong from Manchester City in 2019 for £350,000, City did insert a 30% sell on clause to protect themselves, they did very well out of the move to Leverkusen.

In January 2021 Celtic were in no position to demand 30% of a future fee from the German club, an £11m transfer with a 10% sell on clause would have netted a very handy £2.5m but as supporters know well there is no shortage of funds in Michael Nicholson’s war-chest.

Ben Nygren was signed for a snip at £1.2m with his contract expiring in December, around £1.5m was spent on Shin Yamada with £350,000 securing Hayato Inamura.

All in around £3m, Fulham will be owed a Development Fee for Callum Osmand, just as Celtic are for Daniel Cummings joining West Ham.

Transfer wise Celtic are low-balling Go Ahead Eagles with bids ranging from £1-5-3m for Jakob Breum.

An offer of £5m should secure the Danish winger with that fee recover by shifting on Yang Hyun-jun and Marco Tilio after two years of contributing very little, certainly far less that Kuhn who was signed directly by Rodgers without the influence of Mark Lawwell.

Meanwhile the club has still to announce the opening of their shiny new Barrowfield Training Complex.

Joe McHugh has been Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.
When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.
Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement, cheers big man.
There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same more than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying every success for Scotland's Most Successful Club.

The trophy cabinet may dazzle some but it’s still not as bright as the bank balance. I wouldn’t mind them acting so ‘prudently’ if we were aware of a long-term plan to use the money they are stockpiling for the good of the club, such as stadium expansion and improvement, which would offset losses from the absence of Champions League revenues which are more likely. But no. It’s complete Radio Silence from our “custodians”, the hoarding board. They either have no long-term plans or think we can’t handle the truth.

What would the 21st century equivalent of a’biscuit tin’ be?

I think the money is locked in some kind of cash isa with no withdrawals allowed til Brendan Rodgers leaves. Without doubt the meanest club around.

The big fat bonuses awarded to ‘ the grey suits ‘ – let’s call them ‘ the greys ‘ – collectively, shall make the current spending on new players look like Saturday afternoon beer and bets spending money watching the racing in the boozer …big fat bonuses !

  • Terence Nova says:

More like …” It’s none of your business ” Captain….They treat the support with utter contempt.

  • Frank says:

They are behaving as if they are in financial trouble , why would they cause all this angst with fans and manager alike , time for some very serious questions , this is heavy duty stuff even for this board, something isn’t right here.

    • Captain Swing says:

Fattening the calf for sale? Fortunately Fergus designed-out that risk by ensuring a ‘largest individual shareholder’ might wield a lot of power but would not own a high enough percentage of the shareholding club to be able to sell it to anyone who desired total control. That’s what makes their behaviour difficult to comprehend – no obvious scenario convincingly explains their inaction.

  • Alister Macleod says:

Probably waiting to see if we qualify for the champions league as usual before releasing funds when we should be giving Brendan money to give us a better chance to qualify it’s heartbreaking this biscuit tin mentality give the supporters something to smile about

  • the maister says:

“Liquidating Assets” is a process whereby a company’s assets are converted to or held as cash – in case of liquidation, or to meet personal financial needs.
That seems to be happening at our Club!

  • Batfink says:

    Get them out

  • Ian Grant says:

I see many complaints here about the Board, but if they fail to back the manager, what are we the fans going to do about it? I have some suggestions, but am interested in what others think.

    • Captain Swing says:

People are extremely reluctant to give up their season tickets because the fear is that you’ll never get it back or at least not in the same place where you might be happy and comfortable.

I’ve always thought boycotting the merchandising and stadium catering provided some leverage but then that would be easy for me because I’m not encumbered by ankle-biting rugrats demanding the latest fitba’ shirts every year and greetin’ if they dinnae get to feed their wee fat pus with a kebab pie and kia-ora (or whatever they sell now!).

So it’s difficult to see where a ‘Celts for Change’ type of dissident group would come from within the fanbase when we continue to dominate domestically. It’s not just the hoarding board that’s become fat, lazy and complacent…..

  • Eldraco says:

They wont announce the opening until they sell enough players tae pay for it joe!

  • Scousebhoy says:

The wage thief in the middle of that photo has to go also anothe ex MP Getting paid 40 grand a year for who knows what ?
How we go about it without the bad publicity affecting results which the media would gladly jump on. There is no easy solution to get rid of these imposters.

  • Charlie Green says:

I genuinely believe BR is compromised by wishing to leave without the acrimony of the last time and not wanting to upset anyone. I think if he can win the league and a cup he will feel like he has repaid the debt and can walk away happily.

It wouldn’t surprise me if someone hasn’t spoken to Ange already since BR seems to be reluctant to renew his contract.
