Daily Record duped by Nicholson’s dodgy pledge

All that it took was the blandest of in-house interviews and the Daily Record was on board- Michael Nicholson WILL be bankrolling Celtic’s January transfer activities.

In November 2010 the ailing Glasgow publisher introduced a billionaire from Motherwell to their army of readers.

RECORD SPORT UNDERSTANDS

On November 14 Michael Gannon broke the EXCLUSIVE news in the Record that Celtic were in advanced talks to appoint Wilfried Nancy as manager.

Three weeks later that story was confirmed as true.

Within an hour of Nicholson’s scripted four minute interview with Gerry McCulloch Gannon was portraying the Celtic CEO in a glowing light.

One that few Celtic fans will recognise.

Listening to the Celtic TV Exclusive Gannon opted to highlight:

There’s a project here that we’re all committed to. We want to develop the club and we want to perform.

And in order to do that, we’re all going to get behind Wilfried from today, in the next coming days, the weeks and months and particularly in the transfer windows ahead, both in January and into the summer.

We’ll do everything we can to support Wilfried and his team and the players to deliver success for our supporters.

The board with a project voted at the aborted AGM not to commit to a three and five year plan.

RECORD IN DENIAL

The club that Nicholson wishes to develop languishes in 57th place in the UEFA co-efficient table. On his watch Celtic have won four Champions League matches, all under the manager that resigned in October. Celtic are currently 21st out of 36 in the Europa League on Nicholson’s project.

Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers know the strength of Nicholson’s commitment in transfer windows.

Not since January 2022 have Celtic strengthened during a transfer window. After that Frank Trimboli was replaced by Mark Lawwell. Paul Tisdale now heads up recruitment of players, coaches and managers.

‘Doing everything that we can to support the manager’ is typically hollow from Nicholson. The goal in every transfer window is to produce a profit- apparently to safeguard the long term future of the club. Selling Daizen Maeda will be at the top of Nicholson’s To Do list. Not signing a striker or right winger.

NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT WINDOW

Gannon goes to town on the most non-committal comments and pledges imaginable. Celtic fans have heard it all before. Many times.

Towards the end of January Gannon and his colleagues will be reporting Celtic sources and insiders explaining why it is a notoriously difficult window to do business in. Unless you have Trimboli driving recruitment as he did in January 2022.

Only a complete fool would take Nicholson’s comments at face value, sales of the Record are now below 38,000 per day. Falling at almost the same rate as Celtic’s retail sales.

The Account Manager at Adidas will probably be wondering why neither the CEO or Chairman attended the exciting unveiling of Celtic’s new manager. Only a no-mark Communications Manager was with Nancy at yesterday’s 14 minute media conference.

Working on his pledge to improve communications, Nicholson has removed access to media conferences to fan media outlets.

Joe McHugh has edited Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.

When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.

Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement.

There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same. More than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying the ongoing successes of Celtic.

It s about time the fans let the board know they are no longer part of the celtic family.

They are merely there to pay the bills and the day to day running of our club We the fans the team and the staff are all that matters.

Let s take our club back Back To Our Roots Don’t Back The Suits

  • Harold Shand says:

” We did our utmost to back Wilfried , but as we all know the January transfer window is notoriously difficult , we will review the situation again in the summer and strive to give the manager the tools he needs for success “
