Shock suspension for Charlie Mulgrew

Charlie Mulgrew scoresCharlie Mulgrew is out of Celtic’s flag-day clash with Aberdeen.

The defender was informed last night that he would miss the match due to a red card he received in a friendly against Ajax two weeks ago.

Friendlies are almost always overlooked when it comes to disciplinary matters but yeterday the KNVB (Dutch FA) contacted the SFA to inform them of the red card.

On twitter last night Mulgrew said: “Suspended for the game tomor row because of the red card against Ajax. Gutted.

“I didn’t think it counted either and that’s what we were told after the game. Thought it only counted for violent conduct if reported by ref!”

The absence of Mulgrew means that Neil Lennon will have to select his central defenders from Victor Wanyama, Thomas Rogne and Mikel Lustig with Kelvin Wilson believed to be in talks over a move to Leicester City.

Mulgrew’s absence is a big blow for Neil Lennon with the defender scoring the winning goal in midweek against HJK Helsinki and also scoring the winning goal in Aberdeen’s only visit to Celtic Park last season.

Looking at the squad starting the season Lennon said: “I want players here who are hungry and challenging for places.

“No one is guaranteed their place. We’ve trimmed the squad and it’s a bit more compact, streamlined, whatever you want to call it.

“There will be more togetherness and closeness about the group. This is a new page, that’s what we’ve told players. If you did well last year, same again.

“If you didn’t, you have a blank canvas, so force your way into the team or find your form. Last season is gone now it’s history, this is a new start.”

  • We’ll miss Mulgrew today, and Hayes and McGinn will be out to punish us. However we should have enough quality to see off the Dons and unfurl the flag in front of a good crowd.

    Welcome back Champions.

Disgraceful decision to enforce a ban for a hand ball offence. The good old SFA. The rules applied to the letter of the law. When it suits them.

Especially when you factor in Green and McCoist’s outbursts, it’s difficult not to see it that way.

  • Guys, the real disgrace is that Ogilvie is still in a job. When there is a prima facie case to answer he should have either walked or shown the door.

Ach never mind that lads, come along and cheer the flag.

  • Mark Anthony says:

Wtf?! Suspended because of a red card in a FRIENDLY for a mere seemingly sccidental handball offence? How is this in any way right? And why leave it the night before the game, leaving the club no time to fight against it when it happened two weeks ago?! Bloody shambles.

  • Tully says:

‘KNVB (Dutch FA) contacted the SFA to inform them of the red card.’ – Well no more friendlies in future with these greeting faced scum bags if that’s the level they want to sink to!
