red cardCraig Thomson is expected to be named as the referee for Celtic’s Scottish Cup semi-final with Sevco on April 17.

An announcement will be made later today but yesterday’s announcement of the this weekend’s fixtures and officials cleared the decks for Thomson to take charge.

Bobby Madden refereed Celtic’s 3-1 win over Hearts, Kevin Clancy was in charge last night at Dundee with Willie Collum appointed for the match at Motherwell on Saturday.

The leaves Steven McLean and Thomson as options for the Hampden clash with McLean an unlikely appointment after his display in the Celtic v Inverness Caley Thistle semi-final last season.

Thomson was in charge of last season’s League Cup semi-final between Celtic and Sevco and was generally praised despite a few bizarre decisions.

Late in the first half, with Celtic leading 2-0, Thomson decided to award Celtic a free kick in the centre circle as Leigh Griffiths raced in on the Sevco keeper.

Lee McCulloch escaped unpunished from a trademark elbow on Griffiths skull early in the first half then played keepy-uppy with John Guidetti without being carded by Thomson.
