Aiden McGeady looks on as Spartak and Zenit players cause riot

|

Aiden McGeady was caught up in an amazing after-match free for all following Spartak Moscow’s 1-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg last night.

An 88th minute penalty from Dimitri Kombarov earned Spartak all three points but did little damage to Zenit’s title prospects.

Spartak remain in fourth place with just an outside chance of winning a place in next season’s Champions League while Zenit are six points clear of Rubin Kazan with a game in hand and just six matches left to play.

Clearly there was plenty of needle to the match with the aggro kicking off at the final whistle as Valery Karpin the Spartak boss clashed with Igor Densiov before they were dragged apart.

That incident led to both sets of players and coaching staff getting involved in scuffles which spilled over into the stands.

Moscow police arrested 136 supporters at the match with the 4,000 strong Zenit support tearing out seats to throw at the police.

Both clubs are likely to be hammered for the trouble which comes as Russia attempts to beat England to hosting the 2018 World Cup bid.

In a joint statement issued today with Zenitby Spartak said: “In the immediate vicinity of the bench of spare extremely unpleasant incident occurred – a fight involving representatives of both clubs.
