Celtic defender Mark Wilson has missed out on a call up to the Scotland squad due to a slight groin strain.

Craig Levein’s squad has been decimated by call-off’s for the match against the Faroe Isles with former Celt Paul Caddis amongst those drafted in to the squad.

Wilson has been rotating the right-back position with Cha Du-Ri at Celtic in recent weeks but was unable to accept his Scotland call up.

The defender told Channel 67: “I got a phone call to go and meet up with Scotland last night but I had to call off because my groin is a wee bit sore.

“My main priority is Celtic, I have to be fit to play here and not take any risks going away for games that I don’t really need to play in.

“Apart from that I’m feeling ok and happy to be back in the team, I’m happy that the manager has given me a chance.”

Wilson is the longest serving player currently at Celtic having joined the club from Dundee United in January 2006 for £500,000.

There has been an incredible turnover in players during his time at Parkhead but the defender feels that the current squad has the making of champions.

“We’ve beaten Dundee United and St Mirren with two late goals, maybe last season we would have ran out of belief and not won those games,” Wilson added.

“This group of players is very close together, we know each other well and play football till the last minute.

“The players have gelled together much better than I could have expected. Boys have come in from all around the world and got on well with the ones who’ve been here for a while.

“When you get on well off the pitch it shows on the pitch. Sometimes team spirit can be exaggerated but I’m a big believer in it.

“When things weren’t quite going right against St Mirren you’d maybe run that extra yard for your mate.

“People would have doubted whether we would get the win but we have such a good team spirit that we believed that we could nick that goal.

“Winning 9-0 against Aberdeen was fantastic but it’s just as good when you win 1-0 in the last minute when things look like they could be going wrong.”
