Rangers have again failed to complete the signing of Algerian midfielder Salim Kerkar.

Walter Smith’s hopes of naming the former Guegnon star as a substitute to face Aberdeen today have again been held up by red tape.

On Tuesday the Rangers website announced that the player had signed on until the end of the season- before any paperwork had arrived from France.

Despite training with Rangers for three months the initial deal was shelved when Guegnon informed Rangers that they were entitled to a £300,000 transfer fee for developing the player.

Guegnon, who are third bottom of the French Third Division with eight points from sixteen games and staring at relegation, were believed to have reached an agreement with Rangers that they would receive a cut of any future transfer fee for the midfielder.

Once again the relevant paperwork has failed to arrive despite Tuesday’s claims from the Rangers website.

They told readers: “RANGERS have signed Algerian midfielder Salim Kerkar on a short term deal until the end of the current season.

Ally McCoist added: “He is a lad who is shaping up well. He is a nice lad but more importantly he has a good left foot.”

It’s not the first time this season that Rangers have jumped the gun with signing issues.

Earlier this season Richie Foster featured on the programme cover for the Rangers-Dunfermline Co-Operative Cup match in anticipation of making his debut only to find out hours beforehand that he was ineligable.

Forster had been in the Aberdeen squad that beat Alloa in the previous round but was all set to play in the same tournament for Rangers until finding out that he was ineligible just a few hours before kick-off.

“I never realised I was cup-tied,” Foster said. “I sat on the bench at Alloa and because I hadn’t played I thought I’d be fine to play. Then Coisty  phoned me and asked me if I’d been involved for Aberdeen and I told him I’d sat on the bench but not got on.

“He said he thought that scuppered me and after checking with the SFA found out I couldn’t play.

“So now I haven’t played in the CiS Cup, but I’m still effectively cup-tied for the whole competition. They’re stopping me playing so maybe it needs to be looked at.”

“I think I was meant to play against Dunfermline. We won 7-2 and it would’ve been nice to have been part of that and to know I could be involved later in the competition, especially with Rangers’ record in the competition. But it’s not to be and I have to deal with it.”
