Winning start for Korean bhoys (video)

|

Cha Du-Ri Celtic newsA double from Koo Ja-Cheol helped South Korea get off to a winning start in the Asian Cup with a 2-1 win over Bahrain.

Cha Du-Ri and Ki Sung-Yeung both starred for the Taegeuk Warriers who face Australia on Thursday after the Socceroos beat India 4-0.

It took the Korean’s until the 40th minute to take the lead when a shot from Koo was deflected off Abdulla Al Marzooqu and spun over goalkeeper Mahmood Mansoor into the net.

Six minutes into the second half the Koreans looked to have sealed the points when Mansoor was only able to parry a shot from Cha with Koo following up to net the loose ball.

Korean defender Kwak Tae-Hwi was harshly red carded eight minutes from time for a run of the mill challenge inside the penalty box with striker Faouzi Aaish converting from 12 yards out.

    Mike,

Then again if Korea win the tourney the president has promised that all players involved will be given leave from compulsory national service, meaning that Ki won’t be called up for a year(?) or so. Bit of a catch 22 I’m afraid.

  • Joe McHugh says:

Our man in Korea- Joe Quinn- says that the exception to National Service doesn’t apply to this competition.

Might be a nice incentive though if South Korea reach the final.

Should be a decent test for them against Australia on Thursday- without knowing my Bahrain from my elbow I’d imagine that South Korea and Australia would expect to qualify fairly easily from this group.

Need to take a close look at Ja-Cheol but I think that the international/worldwide element to the squad is strong enough, hopefully any new additions will be from closer to home.
